Leadership

Greetings, readers!

For this week of the Leadership newsletter, we look at how nonprofit leaders are confronting legal and financial challenges—both for their organizations and for the communities they serve.

First, as civil rights protections are increasingly undermined, nonprofits are confronting a difficult question: How do they remain faithful to their missions when the legal system designed to protect their work is being turned against them? Next, social change workers don’t always get to choose our battles. When Rudy Espinoza’s nonprofit got the opportunity to fight back against threats, they had to overcome their fears. Then, the first article in a three-part series, Quiet Violence: How the Tax System Works Against Black Americans, investigates the nation’s tax system and how Black taxpayers face the economic violence of an unequal system.

Finally, government backlash to DEI principles and programming is a clear and present concern for the sector. Our April premium webinar offers nonprofit and philanthropic leaders the opportunity to assess organizational risk and get actionable guidance on how to protect your organization and remain committed to justice. This Thursday is the last chance to take advantage of early bird pricing.

As always, we welcome feedback. Please feel free to email us at [email protected].

The Backlash to Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI): How Justice-Committed Organizations Can Respond Now

As the Trump administration continues its assault on DEI principles, programs, and funding, nonprofit and philanthropic leaders face critical risk assessments. Should we consider changes to how we design and communicate our work? Should we stay the course? In our upcoming premium webinar, a panel of justice-committed practitioners and thought leaders—Bianca Casanova Anderson of ProInspire, Fiona Kanagasingam of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and Kelly Frances Bates of the Interaction Institute for Social Change—will explore strategic organizational responses to diversity, equity, and inclusion backlash. Join us on Thursday, April 24 at 2:00 pm ET for this essential discussion, and take advantage of our early bird special until April 18! Register here…
