Take Action: Protect Medicaid Coverage

Medicaid is the largest payer of substance use services, providing coverage for nearly 14 million people with a mental health or substance use disorder.

Medicaid spent an estimated $29 billion in 2023 on opioid use disorder treatment, while all other federal health department spending on the opioid crisis amounted to just slightly more than $4 billion – Medicaid funding is essential for addressing the addiction and overdose crisis.

Congress is pushing forward with a budget plan that would make drastic cuts to Medicaid. This poses particular risk for people with addiction.

Thanks to the many advocates who have already spoken up about the importance of Medicaid for people and families impacted by addiction. Due to your advocacy, many policymakers have expressed concern about moving forward with a plan that would cut Medicaid.

As the bill moves on to its next steps, your voice is still needed to urge lawmakers to protect Medicaid and access to addiction care.
