Donald Trump is sending a stunning message to campuses across the nation: fall in line or face deportation.
Without notice or clear reason, Trump is targeting international students and faculty for exercising their right to free speech. Hundreds have already had their visas revoked. Some have even been detained and arrested—without clear justification—just for expressing views Trump doesn’t like.
It’s unconstitutional.
That’s why last week, Attorney General Bonta joined a coalition of 19 other state attorneys general to submit an amicus brief and challenge this so-called “Ideological Deportation Policy,” which relies on a set of executive orders directing federal agencies to investigate, detain, and deport noncitizens based on their political speech—not actual threats to public safety.
In California alone, nearly 100 students across UC and CSU campuses, and Stanford have had their visas revoked. These are students who contribute to our economy, enrich our communities, and bring invaluable perspectives to our academic institutions.
AG Bonta is fighting to put a swift stop to Trump’s student visa revocation policy before it does any more damage.
