In a stunning ruling on Friday, the North Carolina Supreme Court’s Republican majority decided to disenfranchise military and overseas voters in the case where a failed GOP candidate is trying to overturn a state supreme court election.

Here’s Attorney General Eric H. Holder’s reaction:

This shocking decision abandons the judiciary’s most basic role, to protect the rights of the people, and sanctions an outright attempt to steal an election. The North Carolina Supreme Court’s Republican majority has, for naked partisan reasons, cherrypicked whose votes count and whose do not. It is the height of political arrogance to tell military members who serve and sacrifice for our country, and other voters, that their votes and those of their family members are questionable.”

“This opinion is both a disgrace and legacy defining for those who put their names behind it.”

Now is a time to fight back for our democracy — will you rush a donation to push for free and fair elections in North Carolina and around the country?

Don’t miss this quote from North Carolina Supreme Court Justice Anita Earls’ dissenting opinion:

“It is no small thing to overturn the results of an election in a democracy by throwing out ballots that were legally cast consistent with all election laws in effect on the day of the election. Some would call it stealing the election, others might call it a bloodless coup, but by whatever name, no amount of smoke and mirrors makes it legitimate.”

Democratic incumbent Justice Allison Riggs, who won last November’s election fair and square — as confirmed by multiple recounts — is now appealing the state supreme court’s ruling and will keep fighting for the will of the people to be heard:

“I’m the proud daughter of a 30-year military veteran who was deployed overseas, and it is unacceptable that the Court is choosing to selectively disenfranchise North Carolinians serving our country, here and overseas.”

This team helped re-elect Democratic Justice Allison Riggs last November, and now we must fight even harder to protect free and fair elections from the GOP. Rush a donation of $30 or more right now to help power this democracy-saving work.

Thanks so much — we’ll keep you posted on what happens next.
