This week’s Bird Word is:
Cere
According to the Cornell Lab Bird Academy ([link removed]) , the cere is the leathery band of skin covering the base of the bill, into which the nostrils open; presumably it protects the nostrils. The cere is present only in certain birds, such as hawks, pigeons (like the one shown below), and some parrots.
