I believe every New Mexican deserves to have a voice.
Our state has had 32 governors, yet most of them never had to worry about the challenges working families are facing right now. That’s why I am running to lift up the voices and stories of working people.
I’m running to be a voice for struggling families. When raising my child as a single mom, we relied on food stamps to get on our feet. I sometimes had to decide between paying rent and buying groceries. I will never forget how that felt, or the kindness of those who helped us. As someone who lived through economic hardship, I’m committed to defending programs like Medicaid and SNAP that provide a lifeline for our communities’ most vulnerable.
After all we’ve been through together, I couldn’t be prouder of my Somáh.
I’m running to be a voice for New Mexico’s farmers. I’m a proud descendant of farmers who’ve been cultivating this land for hundreds of years. The best memories I have are of my grandpa and me picking worms off ears of corn in the field below our village. We’d irrigate and hoe weeds against the towering red mesa of our village of Mesita. I carry those memories with me as I advocate for the prosperity of our New Mexico farmers and for policies that support our state’s agricultural economy.
Corn, beans, and squash have been staples of New Mexican agriculture for centuries.
I’m running to be a voice for small business owners. I started my homemade salsa business when Somáh was two years old. I worked out of a commercial kitchen and bought my red chile pequin from a farm in northern New Mexico. When I wasn’t busy cooking, I’d strap Somáh in her car seat and we’d drive for hours delivering salsa orders to mom-and-pop shops. So when creative, hardworking New Mexicans want to start a small business like I did, our government should make it easier – not harder.
I drove for hours delivering jars of salsa in our red GMC van, often with Somáh in her car seat. Occasionally, we got creative with shoe polish.
For too long, corporate greed and deep-pocketed special interests have been allowed to drown out our voices. But together, I know we can begin a new chapter.
New Mexico has never been led by a voice like mine. But with your help, we can change that together. Will you contribute your very first $5 so we can grow our grassroots campaign and build a future for our state that gives a voice to all its people?
Thanks for hearing my story,
Deb
P.S. I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and fight for progress as governor. Not in spite of challenges I’ve faced in life, but because of them. If you’re with me, please consider chipping in $5 today so we can win this grassroots campaign for New Mexico.
