SEEC Member Rep. Kim Schrier (WA-08) said it best: “Now we are losing these really talented and critical staff through layoffs… Given the disrespect and the uncertainty, and now the impossible workload — why would they stay? This is a very tough time to work for the federal government.”
She’s talking about the latest blow from the Trump administration — massive cuts to the Forest Service workforce. These cuts will gut critical wildfire response capacity and put communities in real danger.
But that’s just the beginning.
Donald Trump is taking a chainsaw to our forests. Recently, his administration began rolling back environmental safeguards across more than half of all U.S. national forests, making it easier to fast-track logging projects with minimal oversight — all under the guise of wildfire prevention.
These reckless cuts ignore the reality we are facing. Nearly 75% of the staff being laid off are trained to fight wildfires, even if their official job title isn’t “firefighter”. When they show up, it counts. But they’re being pushed out of public service while our communities are becoming more susceptible to these disasters.
This is a coordinated assault on our public servants, our public lands, and our safety. We can’t let Trump and his allies print money from our forests while endangering communities and sidelining science.
Thanks to your help in 2024, SEEC PAC was able to re-elect over 95% of our pro-environment members to the U.S. House of Representatives — defying the odds on a night where Democrats lost seats. Now we are counting on you to help our SEEC members pass climate, clean energy and environmental justice policies in the 119th Congress while we continue fighting for a sustainable future.
