Earlier this month, my first bill was passed out of the Senate!
Today, in Pennsylvania, rehabilitative courts such as veterans' courts, drug courts, mental health courts, DUI courts and other specialized programs are referred to in state law as "problem-solving courts" .
That's not quite right.
The more accurate description of these courts is "treatment courts" .
This legislation, which I sponsored with Republican Senator Lisa Baker, renames Pennsylvania's "problem-solving courts" as "treatment courts" - which more accurately reflects the goal of these courts - to help treat and rehabilitate.
It also enables the Supreme Court to support treatment courts in local communities, helps them secure funding, and provide technical assistance to them.
The goal of this legislation is to make Pennsylvania safer by improving outcomes for participants and reducing recidivism, while ensuring that our justice system provides a path to healing, stability, and a second chance for those who need it.
Now, the bill is in the House, and I am hopeful it will pass there and head to the Governor's desk for his signature in the coming months.
