For the past decade, InSight Crime has tracked and analyzed homicide rates across Latin America and the Caribbean, combining data-driven research with on-the-ground investigations. Our experts have uncovered how local criminal dynamics and organized crime have shaped violence throughout the region.
Join us as we break down country-specific homicide trends, reveal what our research has uncovered, and share the methodology behind our efforts to monitor and understand murder rates in the hemisphere.
** What happened in Central America in 2024?
------------------------------------------------------------
Every country in Central America, except Panama, reported a decrease in homicide rates in 2024. While El Salvador’s official data shows a decline, the reports likely exaggerate the actual amount, since the country’s government does not follow the Bogotá Protocol, the regional standard for measuring homicides. As a result, El Salvador’s results are not comparable with other countries that use the Bogotá Protocol.
