The Week in Review
Happy Monday!
I hope you had a wonderful week. I am grateful to serve you all in the 119th Congress. Read below to see what I’ve been working on.
Voting to Advance the U.S. Senate’s Instructions for Budget Reconciliation
I voted for H. Con. Res. 14, the U.S. Senate’s instructions for budget reconciliation. It passed the House by a vote of 216-214. Though the Senate’s instructions called for spending reductions of only $4 billion over 10 years—while the House’s resolution called for reductions of $2 trillion—circumstances changed during the 36 hours before the vote.
- The White House committed to spending reductions of $1.5 trillion, including the Inflation Reduction Act, fraud and waste in federal programs like Medicaid, illegal student loan forgiveness, and numerous other programs.
- Senate Majority Leader Thune also committed to accept the framework of the House’s budget instruction bill.
- Speaker Johnson has reiterated that he will not bring a bill to the Floor that does not conform to the House’s framework—this means any proposed budget must contain spending cuts of at least $1.5 trillion, must pay for new tax relief programs, and must not increase the deficit or our national debt.
These firm commitments from House and Senate Leadership and the White House will provide the chance for an historic reduction in federal spending and the size of the federal government.

Supporting President Trump’s Removal of Violent Gang Members
I introduced a resolution in support of President Trump’s removal of members and affiliates of Tren de Aragua, a violent, transnational criminal gang from Venezuela. My resolution:
- Emphasizes heinous crimes committed by Tren de Aragua members across the United States;
- Recognizes members and affiliates of Tren de Aragua as alien enemies perpetuating an invasion of the United States;
- Affirms that President Trump is properly exercising executive removal authority under the Alien Enemies Act of 1798.
Tren de Aragua is a foreign terrorist organization, and their members can no longer be permitted to wreak havoc on U.S. soil. The Alien Enemies Act gives the President of the United States the authority to detain and deport aliens from foreign adversarial nations, and the U.S. Supreme Court affirmed that authority yesterday.
Members of the violent gang Tren de Aragua illegally invaded the United States during Joe Biden’s four-year open border campaign, and President Trump is acting well within his authority to protect our homeland.
Congress must stand behind President Trump as he works to fulfill the demands of the American people to secure our border and restore safety to our communities.
The resolution can be read here.
The Daily Signal covered the legislation here.
Congress Must Defund Planned Parenthood
H.R. 22, the Safeguarding American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act, passed the House 220-208. The SAVE Act, sponsored by Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX):
- Requires individuals to provide documentation proving U.S. citizenship when registering to vote in federal elections;
- Requires states to remove noncitizens from their official lists of eligible voters;
- Establishes criminal penalties for election officials who register applicants to vote without proof of citizenship.
Securing American elections is crucial to the survival of our Republic. Click the image below to hear more about the SAVE Act:
Congratulating Congressional App Challenge Winners
It was great to host Iraj and Vyshal, this year’s winners of AZ-05’s Congressional App Challenge.
Their app, the Smart Medicine Dispensing System (SMDS) helps prevent drug overdose and under-dose by dispensing the patient’s medicines at controlled times, guiding each patient through the correct treatment.
Congratulations Iraj and Vyshal!
Meeting with GCU President Mueller
Brian Mueller, President of Grand Canyon University (GCU), met with me in my D.C. office.
I have worked closely with GCU over the past few years to ensure that GCU is treated fairly by the Department of Education (ED). Under the radical Biden-Harris regime, ED was weaponized against Christian universities like GCU, which should not be allowed to take place. I’m thankful for ED Secretary McMahon’s commitment to remedy some of the Biden Administration’s actions and end weaponization of the federal government.
Hosting Jeff Hawkins with the Arizona State Troopers Association
It was an honor to welcome Jeff Hawkins, the President of the Arizona State Troopers Association.
We discussed the important work State Troopers do in Arizona, the needs of law enforcement, and all they do to keep our communities safe.
I’m grateful for all of Arizona’s brave law enforcement officers.
Meeting with Arizona Beer and Wine Distributors
Thank you to representatives from AZ Beer and Wine Distributors for dropping by the office.
I’m grateful to represent the best state in the union and for great local business owners to keep Arizona’s economy strong.
Hosting Toyota Executives
It was great to meet with executives from Toyota in my D.C. office.
We discussed policy concerns facing the automotive industry.
I’m grateful to hear from business experts!
Meeting with Students from Hamilton High School and the John Locke Institute
Students on the We the People team from Hamilton High School in Chandler travelled to D.C. for their national competition.
It was a pleasure to meet with them and talk about the history and principles of our Constitutional Republic.
I also had the opportunity to meet and speak with students from the John Locke Institute, which is home to some of the best and brightest students from around the world.
Thanks to all for stopping by!
House Oversight and Government Reform Committee Hearing
The Oversight Committee held a hearing titled “Restoring Trust in FDA: Rooting Out Illicit Products.” As Congress looks to restore trust in the FDA and crack down on the dangerous, illicit products in our drug supply, it is critical that we distinguish between true public health threats and legitimate, medical practices – such as pharmaceutical compounding. Compounded medications, when prepared by licensed U.S. pharmacies and FDA-registered outsourcing facilities, are a vital part of our healthcare system.
These drugs are not counterfeit, knockoff, or illicit products. They are produced legally, under rigorous oversight from state pharmacy boards and, in many cases, the FDA itself. Click the image below to watch my questions from the hearing:
House Judiciary Committee Hearings
I chaired a Crime and Federal Government Surveillance Subcommittee hearing titled “A Continued Pattern of Government Surveillance of U.S. Citizens.” The Fourth Amendment Guarantees Americans the right to be free from unreasonable government searches and seizures. With advances in technology, Americans’ personal data has become easily tracked and collected. The government can—and does—obtain this information without a warrant and without ever notifying an individual who is subject to a search. This is especially prevalent in the context of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA).
Under previous directors, the FBI abused its authorities under Section 702 of FISA to conduct millions of queries of Americans’ communications. The FBI conducted nearly three million such searches in 2021 alone. These actions violate the privacy and civil liberties of Americans and infringe on their Fourth Amendment protections. I’ve called for serious reforms to FISA for years, and I will continue fighting to defend Americans’ Fourth Amendment rights. Click the image below to watch my opening statement from the hearing:
The Subcommittee on Immigration Integrity, Security, and Enforcement held a hearing titled “Sanctuary Jurisdictions: Magnet for Migrants, Cover for Criminals.” Guided by Democrat officials and radical policies, sanctuary jurisdictions provide a safe haven to criminal aliens at the expense of Americans. Sanctuary jurisdictions serve as a magnet for migrants, as illegal aliens know they can travel to sanctuary cities and receive a bevy of taxpayer-funded benefits. Radical Democrat officials not only actively thwart law enforcement efforts to cooperate with federal immigration officials, but they also target local law enforcement officials for complying with federal law.
Sanctuary cities letting criminal aliens back onto the streets puts everyone in danger. Click the image below to watch my questions from the hearing:
