Hi Friend,
Last year, under the leadership of our Executive Director Laura Hern=C3=A1n=
dez, Freedom for Immigrants publicly announced a new direction for our orga=
nization. This shift wasn=E2=80=99t about walking away from the work we=E2=
=80=99ve done alongside our partners=E2=80=94work that=E2=80=99s reunited f=
amilies, closed detention centers, and brought national attention to the cr=
isis of immigration incarceration.
It was about recognizing that something essential was missing.
Our past strategies=E2=80=94like documenting abuses and reporting them to o=
versight bodies=E2=80=94brought visibility and helped hold institutions acc=
ountable. But we also saw the limits of those systems. Even before the curr=
ent administration moved to dismantle the very agencies responsible for det=
ention oversight, we knew we needed to chart a path that didn't rely on sys=
tems unwilling=E2=80=94or unable=E2=80=94to deliver justice.
That=E2=80=99s why our new vision centers on building power with those dire=
ctly impacted by the system=E2=80=94people currently and formerly in immigr=
ation detention. We=E2=80=99re investing in organizing with them, not for t=
hem. We=E2=80=99re building what we felt was lacking in the movement: infra=
structure that uplifts directly impacted leadership as the force that will =
bring this system down.

Last year, under the leadership of our Executive Director Laura Hernández, Freedom for Immigrants publicly announced a new direction for our organization. This shift wasn’t about walking away from the work we’ve done alongside our partners—work that’s reunited families, closed detention centers, and brought national attention to the crisis of immigration incarceration.

Last year, under the leadership of our Executive Director Laura Hernández, Freedom for Immigrants publicly announced a new direction for our organization. This shift wasn’t about walking away from the work we’ve done alongside our partners—work that’s reunited families, closed detention centers, and brought national attention to the crisis of immigration incarceration.
It was about recognizing that something essential was missing.
Our past strategies—like documenting abuses and reporting them to oversight bodies—brought visibility and helped hold institutions accountable. But we also saw the limits of those systems. Even before the current administration moved to dismantle the very agencies responsible for detention oversight, we knew we needed to chart a path that didn't rely on systems unwilling—or unable—to deliver justice.
That’s why our new vision centers on building power with those directly impacted by the system—people currently and formerly in immigration detention. We’re investing in organizing with them, not for them. We’re building what we felt was lacking in the movement: infrastructure that uplifts directly impacted leadership as the force that will bring this system down.
This year’s annual appeal—Freedom for Immigrants, Until Everyone is Free: Move with the Movement—is designed to fund that work. And thanks to your support, we’ve already raised 74% of our $500,000 goal!
