The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) will not extend Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghans and Cameroonians, as first reported Friday by Hamed Aleaziz of The New York Times.

Nearly 10,000 nationals of those countries could be put on track for deportation in May and June, according to DHS officials. A significant portion of the Afghans affected got temporary protections after seeking refuge in the U.S. following the fall of Kabul in 2021, Aleaziz notes.

DHS assistant secretary of public affairs Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that "Afghanistan no longer continues to meet the statutory requirements for its TPS designation," reports Juliana Kim of NPR.

Separately, after the DHS sent Ukrainian humanitarian parolees erroneous messages saying they had seven days to leave the United States, Sens. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-New Hampshire) condemned the mistaken termination notices, reports Corinne Smith of the Alaska Beacon.

In a joint letter to Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the senators called the administration’s error "alarming."

In other news, in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling, the Justice Department says it is not required to return a wrongfully deported Maryland father from a prison in El Salvador, report Olivia George and Marianne LeVine of The Washington Post.

And doubling down on the deportation agreement with El Salvador, Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced yesterday that the administration has sent an additional 10 people there, alleging that they are affiliated with gangs, reports Tara Suter of The Hill.

Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele is expected to visit the White House today, reports Zolan Kanno-Youngs of The New York Times.
