Support Vulnerable Families in Gros Morne, Haiti

The Dominican Republic has deported 180,000 Haitians since last October, when it announced that it would begin deporting 10,000 Haitians per week. Human rights organizations have accused the Dominican Republic of violations, including lack of due process, breaking in to homes to arrest and deport families, and seizing unaccompanied children. In other cases, the authorities seize the parents, and children are left abandoned at school.

Many deportees try to smuggle back in, which until last week, was made possible by traffickers, for a small fee. Last week the Dominican Republic's president announced a series of measures designed to crack down on illegal border crossings, including additional personnel at the border, increasing the size of the border wall, and increasing military check points.

Deportees from the Dominican Republic cannot go to Port-au-Prince, which is controlled by gangs, or to the South, because the roads are controlled by gangs. Communities in the North, such as Gros Morne, are left trying to help these refugees with very limited resources. The local Catholic parish, Lachandle, has stepped up to identify the most vulnerable and, with your help, will provide small cash stipends to help families to get back on their feet.

Goal:

Distribute $225 over 6 months to 200 families who are unable to pay for food, clothing, medical care or housing.
