Dear MoveOn member,
We're increasingly living in a lawless country. The MAGA Supreme Court handed Donald Trump a series of outrageous wins last week that make one thing crystal clear: The courts are not going to save us.
The most dangerous of these rulings came on Monday, when the Supreme Court, in a 5-4 ruling, essentially greenlit the Trump administration's mass deportation of Venezuelan migrants—the vast majority of whom had no criminal record whatsoever—to a notoriously horrific prison in El Salvador.1
The implications are dire for all of us—not only immigrants. As The New York Times wrote, "If government officials can say anything, true or not, to justify their actions—as they did with the Venezuelan migrants—what stops them from doing that to an American citizen? If they never have to prove someone is actually who they say he is, they can claim anything and act with impunity against anyone."2
On Tuesday, Trump's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, told the media that the Trump administration is considering deporting American citizens to El Salvador.3
But there is hope, John. And that hope lies with us. It lies with the 3 million people who took to the streets last Saturday to fight back.
Yes, it's true that it's not yet enough. We need to keep building and organizing more and more people to join us on the streets to peacefully protest. It's not going to happen overnight. We have to double and then double again the number of people who are participating in our nonviolent movement to end Trump's tyranny and throw Trump and his billionaire cronies out of office.
We're in this together. And we need your involvement in as many ways as you can give, including financially, because grassroots organizing and movement building is resource intensive. So, if you're able, please start a monthly donation of $5.
Yes, I'll chip in $5 a month. (If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately.)
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
MoveOn was built for this moment. As Robert Reich said last month, "MoveOn can reach, train, support, organize, and communicate at a scale that is unparalleled in the progressive movement, and it does so with cutting-edge technology. We need MoveOn in this moment, now more than ever."
Remember, no government has maintained legitimacy and power after 3.5% of their population came together to vocalize their dissent against it at a peak event.4 Three million of us were in the streets on Saturday, and it was one of the largest decentralized protests in American history. But we have to build from here. 3.5% would be about 11 million people.
We can do it, together. And we must. We cannot become a country that disappears people because of a tattoo, someone's national origin, or their courage in speaking out against injustice. We cannot become a lawless, fascist state run by billionaires for billionaires.
We can't, and we won't.
As protest signs proclaimed last weekend, "Courage is contagious." Let's show our courage and inspire courage all around us.
Can you join us by chipping in $5 a month to fight back against and ultimately end Trump's tyranny?
Yes, I'll chip in $5 a month. (If you've saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately.)
No, I'm sorry, I can't make a monthly donation.
Thanks for all you do.
