Tax Day is right around the corner. And while you and I pay our taxes in full and on time, Trump and the GOP want to make it easier for billionaires and multimillionaires to cheat the system.

Even before Trump’s nominee to run the IRS is confirmed by the Senate, Elon Musk’s so-called “Department of Government Efficiency” (DOGE) is leading mass firings at the IRS, gutting enforcement against billionaire tax cheats and ensuring the ultra-wealthy can evade paying taxes with zero consequences. With thousands of IRS jobs already on the chopping block, Trump is taking us back to the days when millionaires were audited LESS than working-class families.

The consequences of these attacks are devastating. After investments made through the Inflation Reduction Act in 2022, the IRS collected $86 billion in revenue through increased tax enforcement exclusively targeting the rich.[1] But now, Trump is making it easier for billionaires to game the system.

We must fight back. If Trump succeeds in abolishing the IRS, it will become nearly impossible to hold the wealthy accountable for paying what they owe. That’s because there will be fewer audits of billionaires and less scrutiny of billion-dollar corporations. And that means less revenue for healthcare, infrastructure, and other public services.
