John, on Thursday the House passed a bill that could silence millions of eligible voters – maybe even you or someone you love.
They call it the “SAVE Act” but we call it a modern-day poll tax.
What else do you call forcing millions of Americans – first-time voters and long term – to jump through new bureaucratic hoops just to cast a ballot next year?
This bill is a disaster for your rights and mine – and if passed, it will:
- Make it much tougher for married women who’ve changed their name to vote – like something straight out of the Handmaid's Tale.
-
Force voters to provide in-person proof of citizenship—like a passport or birth certificate— just to register or update their voter registration.
-
Ban online voter registration (which 42 states currently have), voter registration drives, and mail-in registration, which millions of Americans rely on.
John, we can’t let this anti-voter wish list become law. That means we need to stop it in the Senate – and we have just a few short weeks to make sure Senators hear from us.
So, we’re spinning up a massive rapid-response campaign – thousands of calls to key Senate offices, shutting down the anti-voter lies that are fueling this effort, and public education to ensure every voter this bill would silence knows what’s at stake.
Our freedom to vote is one of the most sacred in a democracy, and we must take action to protect it. But what happens next is up to you – because the more Common Cause members who chip in to fuel this fight, the better our chances of stopping this bill.
Can you chip in $3 to show Congress that we will not stand silent when they try to dismantle the right to vote?
John, we cannot allow Congress or any legislators to pass legislation to dismantle our right to vote.
Thanks for sticking with us,
The team at Common Cause
