Friend --

As the country grapples with COVID-19 and a defining moment around racial injustice, Pride Month feels a bit different this year.

But it’s important -- especially today -- that we reflect on the Stonewall uprising and the beginnings of the LGBTQ+ rights movement in this country. We should also recognize the contributions of LGBTQ+ people of color -- including Marsha P. Johnson -- who led the uprising at the Stonewall Inn 51 years ago.

The Stonewall uprising paved the way for the LGBTQ+ victories of today, and in many ways, the movements against homophobia and anti-Black racism are intertwined. At their core is the idea that every American has the right to live without fear or discrimination under the law. And Pride Month is a reminder that we must redouble our efforts and make much-needed reforms to fight injustice at every level of government.

Last year, I was proud to be a part of the efforts to pass the Equality Act in the House, ensuring that all LGBTQ Americans are treated fairly under the law. Unfortunately, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell wouldn’t even let that bill come to the Senate floor.

There’s still work to do, that’s why I’d like to begin Pride Month with a renewed focus on passing the Equality Act. Sign on to affirm your commitment to passing this legislation.
