John, Just three days ago, President Trump issued an executive order directing the Department of Justice to take action against states that are forcing Big Oil to pay for the damage caused by climate pollution. Now, Congress is considering legislation that would create blanket immunity for the fossil fuel industry from climate accountability. We need to push back on this right away! Send a message to Congress: No blanket immunity for Big Oil’s climate crimes!

Throughout its history, Big Oil has sought a "Get Out of Jail Free" card to shield itself from responsibility for its climate deception and the damages they have caused. Last year, we helped pass legislation in New York to make big oil pay for the damage caused by climate pollution. With momentum building in climate lawsuits and state superfund legislation in more states across the country, we must be vigilant to ensure that Big Oil and its allies aren’t able to escape accountability.

Disasters like floods, fires, and hurricanes are becoming more intense, and our communities are paying billions to deal with climate impacts. That's why a growing number of cities and states are filing lawsuits or passing new legislation that would make the fossil fuel industry pay its fair share for climate damages. After all, Big Oil knew for decades it was causing this crisis but lied to the public and lobbied against climate solutions. Now, Big Oil has President Trump and a politicized Department of Justice on its side and is turning to its allies in Congress to try and secure a "liability waiver" that would give them blanket immunity from any efforts to hold them accountable for their climate crimes. This "get out of jail free" card would allow them to keep raking in record profits while we all pay the price of their pollution. This is the same type of legislation that the gun industry was able to pass in 2005 that makes it so they can’t be held responsible when their product kills people. Urge your members of Congress to oppose this Big Oil bailout! We can’t give this toxic industry any more free passes when our communities are burning, flooding, and being destroyed by climate change.

Across the country, a growing number of communities are fighting to hold the fossil fuel industry accountable. Following Vermont and New York’s climate superfund laws, ten other states have introduced similar legislation! Together, we can fight back and WIN against potential efforts to slip immunity legislation into must-pass bills like the budget, appropriations, or permitting reform. It starts with you taking action today! Tell Congress: No immunity for Big Oil! Onward together,
