“It’s the most extraordinary attack on voting rights in American history…This is an attempt to destroy American democracy as we know it.”

That’s a quote from Sean Wilentz, an American history professor at Princeton. He spoke to Democracy Docket about the SAVE Act, which could disenfranchise over 21 million Americans — and which just passed the House of Representatives.

It should really be called the Save Politicians Act — a desperate effort to rig the rules, block millions from voting (especially low-income Americans, seniors, rural voters, and people of color), and dodge accountability at the ballot box.

We have already mobilized over 200,000 Americans to contact their U.S. Senators and demand a NO vote on the SAVE Act. I’m asking if we can count on you to keep supporting our fight for the freedom to vote.

If you’re more determined than ever to stop the MAGA voter suppression agenda, please rush a donation of any amount right now. [[link removed]]

Subject: The most dangerous voter suppression bill yet

ALERT: the House of Representatives is about to vote on the most dangerous voter suppression bill we’ve seen yet, and millions could be disenfranchised.

The SAVE Act would unnecessarily force all Americans to prove their citizenship in person — with documents like a passport or birth certificate — every time they register to vote or change their registration, even if you move.

This would disproportionately keep eligible young Americans, low-income Americans, Americans of color, American women who’ve changed their names after getting married or divorced, and rural Americans from registering to vote — potentially silencing 21 million voices in our democracy.

No passport? Birth certificate with an old name? No time to drive hours to an election office? You could be unable to vote.

The legislation would also compel problematic voter purges, functionally end mail-in and online voter registration as well as third-party registration drives, and upend automatic voter registration.

This harmful bill is the latest in an onslaught of new restrictive legislation, disinformation, and coordinated attacks on our elections and our democracy.

And we need your help as we fight back. Your donation to Fair Fight Action today strengthens our collective power to stop anti-voter extremists and tell them “Hands off our votes.” [[link removed]]

The SAVE Act would especially target:

* Black and Latino voters, who disproportionately register to vote through third-party registration efforts
* Young voters, who are less likely to have the forms of ID required by the bill
* As many as 69 million women nationwide who’ve changed their names and can’t use their birth certificate to prove their citizenship

We’re calling the SAVE Act what it is: an attempt to legalize voter suppression.

While disproportionately hurting voters of color, the legislation also stokes racial prejudice and discriminatory fears of unwanted individuals voting. Republicans claim they need to pass this bill to prevent people who aren’t citizens from voting in federal elections — which is already against the law.

Under this legislation, we could see mass voter purges used to prevent access to the ballot box. Furthermore, the SAVE Act does not require voters to be notified before they are removed from voting rolls — rolling back one of the essential protections of the National Voter Registration Act.

The right to vote is fundamental to our democracy. Our elected officials should be working to protect this right, not restrict it.

So we’re rallying Americans to tell their lawmakers to vote NO on the SAVE Act, and we’ll continue working to prevent voter suppression.

Help Fair Fight Action ensure free and full access to the ballot so all voters have a voice in the decision-making that impacts their daily lives, their freedoms, and their futures. Chip in today to help save our democracy. [[link removed]]

We’re grateful for your commitment.
