Earlier this month, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) laid off around 10,000 employees, including many who provide vital services that keep American families safe from climate change. Keep reading to find out how →
John, this means chaos and financial pain for thousands of families – and it means that as a nation, we are now much more vulnerable to extreme heat and other climate-driven weather.
With last year being the warmest one on record and this upcoming summer already shaping up to be historically hot, this is the worst possible decision the Trump administration could have made if it wants to protect Americans and keep them healthy.
But of course, that’s not what their priorities are. Where the administration falls short, SEEC members step in – from fighting back against EPA defunding to keeping the pressure on HHS, our 100 dedicated climate champions in Congress are leading the charge in protecting the interests of our environment and our health. These are just a few of the projects whose funding and/or staff members have been slashed:
* The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, which provides support to 6 million Americans to pay utility bills for air conditioning and heating. A majority of Americans who die from extreme heat perish indoors, and this program was critical to preventing completely avoidable loss of life.
* The CDC’s Division of Environmental Health Science and Practice, which works on climate and health programs that provide grants to local and state health departments to deal with local problems on the ground.
* The HeatRisk tracker tool that combines health and weather data to predict the risk that temperatures pose to Americans with different underlying health conditions. State and county health departments use this tool to keep their residents safe during extreme heat events.
* National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health which houses some of the nation’s top experts on keeping workers safe from heat stroke as they labor in extreme temperatures and which also certifies respirators for firefighters battling wildfires.
John, we need to look out for one another in the face of extreme weather – especially if the Trump administration refuses to do its part to protect Americans. Please consider powering the work of SEEC members in Congress as they fight for the much-needed heat protections and resources that keep us all safe. [[link removed]]
