John, Our democracy is strongest when voters can participate. But in Florida, Republicans are showing their contempt for that principle by proposing legislation that would make it almost impossible for voters to get citizen-led initiatives on the ballot. It’s clear: Our democracy is under attack, and we all need to speak out against efforts to undermine the will of the people. Will you sign on to help push back against Republican attempts to silence voters in Florida? Here’s what Florida Republicans are trying to do: under HB 1205, groups would need to pay an unnecessary, exorbitant $1 million bond before they can even start collecting petition signatures — they’d also be subject to extreme petition collection rules and penalties, all while having much tighter deadlines to submit signatures. Meanwhile in the state senate, SB 7016 would add cumbersome steps before citizen-led petitions can move forward, including new requirements for review by Florida’s attorney general and state supreme court. Another senate bill (SB 1414) would change election laws giving the attorney general greater review of ballot initiatives and expanding the role of the Office of Election Crimes, while making voter registration updates more strict. John, this is urgent: What’s happening in Florida is a coordinated attack on citizen-led ballot initiatives. And make no mistake — it’s all part of a nationwide attempt to make it harder for voters to make their voices heard. For an organization like ours, which invests in citizen-led ballot initiatives to advance redistricting reform that results in fairer maps, these Florida bills would represent a significant setback. Thank you for taking action, The NDRC Team
