Weekend Reading

Hi Friend,

In these challenging times, we are grateful for all you do to build a more just, peaceful world. Every day, our AFSC community puts Quaker values into action—standing with immigrants facing deportation, speaking out against genocide in Gaza, demanding elected officials enact policies that serve the common good, and more. Your unwavering commitment reminds us that real change is possible when we unite with courage and compassion. Thank you for being vital partners in creating a future where all people can live in safety, peace, and dignity.

MIGRANT RIGHTS

Building immigrant power through education [link removed]

No one should fear being detained or deported. But right now, immigrants across the U.S. face that threat every day in their homes, schools, workplaces, and communities. To help people understand and defend their rights, AFSC is holding “Know Your Rights” trainings in many states, including Oregon. In this interview, AFSC’s Alonso Oliveros explains how these workshops are equipping immigrants and allies with vital information and building community power. Read more. [link removed]

GAZA

Our bodies can no longer hold us [link removed]
By Serena Awad

Since March 2, Israel has prevented all humanitarian aid from entering Gaza—the longest period that aid has been blocked since October 2023. Third Tuesdays: Protect, Resist, and Build with AFSC [link removed]
(April 15, 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT)

Are you looking for ways to support your community while advocating for real change? Join our monthly webinar series every third Tuesday of the month. This week, we'll meet on Tax Day to discuss harmful measures under consideration in the federal budget. That includes threats to SNAP and Medicaid, tax cuts for the wealthy, and increased funding for immigration detention. We'll explore the impacts of these policies and share skills and stories about how mutual aid, legislative pressure, and other strategies can help us meet the needs of our communities.

TAKE ACTION

Act now to end the genocide in Sudan [link removed]

This Tuesday, April 15, marks two years since the start of the war in Sudan. Tens of thousands of people have been killed, millions displaced, and famine is spreading. With the crisis worsening each day, the U.S. must speak out to end this genocide. There are efforts in Congress to stop the flow of arms to Sudan and to push for an end to the war. Please join us in urging elected officials to support these efforts, ensure vital humanitarian aid for Sudan, and work for long-term, sustainable peace.
