This week, we saw the Trump administration continue to methodically roll back gun violence prevention solutions. We know with the sheer volume of actions being taken by this administration, it’s hard to keep track. So let’s break down the latest:

1. Dismantling the ATF “Zero Tolerance” policy [[link removed]] – On Monday, Attorney General Pam Bondi announced that they will remove the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) “zero-tolerance” policy implemented to crack down on rogue gun dealers who egregiously and repeatedly violate federal law and hold them accountable for dangerous and negligent practices that fuel gun violence.

By dismantling this policy, the Trump Administration is essentially signaling to irresponsible gun dealers that they can now break the law without consequence.

2. “Second Amendment Task Force” – On Wednesday, Attorney General Pam Bondi sent a memo to the Department of Justice announcing a new task force to “protect” Second Amendment rights. The memo describes the purpose of the task force as “developing and executing strategies to use litigation and policy to advance, protect, and promote compliance with the Second Amendment" and to “advance President Trump’s pro-gun agenda.”

In a country where guns are the number one killer of kids, the Trump administration is clearly signaling that they care more about expanding Second Amendment rights and profits for the gun industry than protecting the safety of our children.

3. Continued Failure to Appoint Qualified ATF Leadership: On Wednesday, the Trump administration removed interim ATF director Kash Patel from his position, replacing him with Army Secretary Daniel P. Driscoll. Both individuals are not only unqualified for this role, but have also been expected to simultaneously hold other positions. Overseeing the gun industry is not a part-time gig and we cannot afford to treat it as such. The ATF needs permanent, dedicated leadership committed to public safety, not gun industry profits. Without proper leadership, the American people will ultimately be the ones to suffer.

These tactics are not a surprise — they were outlined clearly in Trump’s Project 2025 and Agenda 47 as ways to advance a “guns everywhere” agenda.

This is not a time to stay silent. Brady will not allow the Trump administration to quietly roll back the gun safety measures we have fought so hard to enact. It is up to us all to raise the alarm.

Public Health Week

This week is National Public Health Week – a time when we can reflect on the state of the gun violence epidemic and the work that’s being done by dedicated healthcare professionals all across the country.

Of the 15 leading causes of death, firearm-related harms receive the third lowest amount of federal research funding. This is despite the fact that firearms are the number one killer of children and teens in the United States.To address this discrepancy, Brady has been working to reframe gun violence as the public health crisis that it is, employing methods that have been used to fight other deadly health crises.

Our leading voices in this movement are our members of This Is Our Lane advisory council, chaired by Brady Board Chair and Chief Medical Office Dr. Joseph Sakran. This Is Our Lane fosters collaboration across the healthcare community and ushers in proven public health solutions to gun violence.

In the last few months, the Trump administration has worked to undermine gun violence prevention solutions and the public health resources necessary to inform them. However, healthcare professionals have continued to keep up the fight, putting the well being of their patients first and having essential conversations about gun safety.

Activism Across the Country

We are continually inspired by all the powerful actions our supporters take to advocate for gun violence prevention, educate others on the gun violence epidemic, and protect their communities!
Last weekend, a number of Brady chapter members and supporters took part in the “Hands Off” events — a series of protests across the country. Participants marched, telling the Trump administration to keep its HANDS OFF gun violence prevention laws.

Brady also hosted a series of workshops this week!

On Sunday, Marlita, of Brady’s Team ENOUGH Executive Council, and Alyssa, Brady DC Youth Advisory Council member, hosted workshops during the Latino Medical Student Association (LMSA) Salud Advocacy Summit in DC to tell students about Brady, Team ENOUGH, our mission, and the This Is Our Lane public health initiative.

On Tuesday, Stephan Abrams, Team Enough Executive Council Member and National Chapter Coordinator, hosted a workshop sharing ways to get involved in the movement to end gun violence with 150 high schoolers. And that same evening, our California volunteer state legislative chair, Ruth Borenstein, led a training on Brady sponsored bills in California and how to advocate for them effectively.
