George Floyd, Eric Garner, Breonna Taylor, and far too many other of our fellow Americans have been murdered by racist police officers.
As the countless protestors have so bravely said, often at risk to their personal safety, these killings are part of a systemic problem with how we police in this country.
That’s why I’m so proud to work with the Congressional Black Caucus to introduce new legislation that seeks to end the systemic racism in our criminal justice system: the Justice in Policing Act .
Our bill ensures accountability for violent police officers, bans the chokeholds that killed George Floyd and Eric Garner, deters racial profiling, increases transparency, works to demilitarize our police force, and requires greater use of body cameras.
Additionally, it calls for new training programs for our police forces on de-escalation, and stricter standards for hiring to prevent racists from being put in a position where they can kill innocent people.
In the coming weeks, I will be moving forward with this legislation in the House Judiciary Committee, and we’re going to need all the support we can get.
Black Lives Matter, and we can’t stop fighting until that sentiment is fully reflected in our criminal justice system.
Thank you for fighting for a better world,
Jerry
