Hands Off! Rally
Speaking with constituents at the Hands Off rally was a powerful reminder that I came to Congress to fight for the most vulnerable. In Congress, I’ve been fighting to stop the billionaire takeover of our government, to protect and expand programs like Medicaid and Social Security, and to defend immigrant and LGBTQ+ communities from hateful attacks. That’s what the Hands Off rally was all about, saying enough is enough to the Trump Administration and Congressional Republicans, and their policies. I was proud to hear from organizers, activists, and everyday people demanding a government that keeps its hands off our healthcare, our communities, and our rights. Watch my remarks here.
Education and the Workforce Committee markup
This week in the Education and the Workforce Committee, we marked up a slate of Republican bills that prioritize culture war politics and corporate loopholes over the real needs of working people.
I strongly opposed efforts to target trans students and censor classrooms under the guise of “parental rights.” I also spoke out against two bills that would seemingly roll back key labor protections. These bills would allow employers to avoid paying workers for required trainings and reduce overtime pay by changing how caregiving benefits are calculated. I remain focused on strengthening the Fair Labor Standards Act, expanding paid leave, investing in workforce training, and supporting policies I’ve championed to uplift families in our communities.
Minnesota Minute: Amy Cooper
This week, I spoke on the House floor to recognize Amy Cooper, a recipient of the Minnesota Wilma Rudolph Courage Award. Amy’s tireless work to expand opportunities for girls and women in sports is a powerful reminder of what leadership rooted in equity looks like. We could not be more proud of her for this accomplishment!
Minnesota Interfaith Power and Light
I sat down with Interfaith Power & Light, to talk about what’s at stake in this moment. From clean air and safe drinking water to the ongoing threat of climate change, we all agreed that our communities can’t afford the Trump Administration’s cuts to the Environmental Protection Agency. These leaders are raising their voices for the people who are always hit first and worst by environmental rollbacks.
Meals on Wheels Community Champions Week
For so many in our community, a serious diagnosis can mean choosing between paying for treatment or putting food on the table. I was able to visit Open Arms of Minnesota and learned about the organization, based in Minneapolis, that delivers free, medically tailored meals to people living with life-threatening illnesses. Open Arms is filling in the gaps but they shouldn't have to do it alone. I spoke with workers about legislation that I've championed to support community-based nutrition programs that improve health outcomes and lower long-term healthcare costs.
Visiting Cooper High School

I had the pleasure of visiting Cooper High School in Robbinsdale, where I was welcomed with a student-led tour and a great conversation with students. We talked about everything from means to serve in Congress and I shared the responsibilities I carry representing Minnesota’s 5th District in Washington.
Visiting Parents In Community Action (PICA) Head Start Training Center
The Trump administration attempted to block government funded grants which would have shut off funding for dozens of Head Start programs across the country, threatening early childhood education for our most vulnerable kids. I visited PICA Head Start Training Center in Minneapolis to visit the children and hear directly from educators about the devastating impact these cuts will have on students and families in our state. Congress must fight to protect Head Start and invest in our children’s future, not defund it.
In Service,
Ilhan Omar
