Dear Granite City Neighbors,
The temperature outside isn’t the only thing that’s warming up! The action at the Capitol this past week was red-hot, with late night negotiations, bipartisan budget agreements, bill presentations, and more.
Here’s your latest update from the Capitol:

*Strong Pensions = Strong Schools*
As a freshman football coach and father of two daughters, every day I see first-hand the importance of teachers in the lives of our children. Although Minnesota prides itself on being an “education state,” only 12% of teachers report being “very satisfied” with their jobs. As a result, Minnesota’s school staffing shortage is at crisis levels. Nearly nine out of ten school districts in Minnesota are not fully staffed. We need to use every tool in our toolbox to support our teachers.
One of those tools is pensions. We can recruit and retain more people into the education profession by improving teachers’ pensions, and providing them with a guaranteed reliable source of income in retirement.
Hundreds of teachers from across the state came to the Capitol to rally support for my bill, HF 1582 [ [link removed] ], which reforms teacher pensions by instilling a career rule of 60 years of age, 30 years of service, lowers penalties for early retirement, and increases their Cost of Living Adjustment. I’m proud to report that my presentation of HF 1582 was a big success, and we achieved bipartisan consensus for the need to improve educators’ pensions.

*Higher Education Budget Negotiations*
As the Co-Chair of the House Higher Education Committee, it’s my job to take the lead in passing our state’s nearly $4 billion Higher Education budget. This past week, I’ve been working with my GOP counterpart, Rep. Marion Rarick, to negotiate a bill that can receive the support of both House Republicans and Democrats.
My main priorities are protecting St. Cloud State University and St. Cloud Technical & Community College from devastating cuts, continuing investment in the North Star Promise Program to cover the cost of tuition for students from families making $80,000 or less, and funding the Minnesota State Grant Program. I’m also pushing hard to secure funding for the St. Cloud Medical School to get the programming they need to educate the next generation of Central Minnesota’s healthcare workforce.
Higher Ed Team
Thanks to my incredible staff for all their hard work in negotiations!
After countless long hours and some late nights, I’m proud to report that we have reached a bipartisan budget agreement. As of the time of this writing, the details have not yet been made public, so stay tuned for next week’s update for all the details.

*Town Hall – Fighting the Trump/Musk Cuts*
As your State Representative, it’s my job to stand up to the Trump administration’s policies that are causing harm to my constituents, and fight back to protect our families, schools, communities, and fundamental rights.
Whether it’s undermining public education, imposing tariffs that drive up the cost of living and doing business, firing thousands of federal workers with no warning, or cutting Medicaid to give tax breaks to billionaires, the actions we see being taken in Washington, D.C. on a near daily basis are alarming, disturbing, and downright dangerous.
That’s why I’m hosting a special town hall meeting in St. Cloud on *Thursday, April 17, at 7pm* to fight back against the Trump administration’s harmful policies together. To receive the event location, please register here [ [link removed] ].
Town Hall
I’ll be joined by Sen. Aric Putnam and Senate Majority Leader Erin Murphy. This event will feature a presentation about how the federal government’s actions are hurting the people of Minnesota, and most importantly, it’s an opportunity for people in our community to voice their fears, frustrations, and ideas. I’m eager to listen to what you have to say and work together to stand up for our shared values.
Please reach out to me with any questions about the event. I hope to see you and our community turn out for this important town hall meeting next Thursday!

*Stay in Touch*
That’s it for this week! The legislature is pausing action until April 21st, so I’ll be back home in our community, meeting with constituents, hosting our town hall, and eating Easter candy with my family. Please continue to stay in touch and let me know how I can best serve you and your family!
Go Timberwolves!
Sincerely,
Rep. Dan Wolgamott
District 14B
