Hi John,

Yesterday Josh shared a POLITICO article about the importance of Latino voters in the next election - and it directly named our race! This is a big red flag for us here in the Valley, and we want to share why. (Ok, here goes a deep dive into misinformation tactics, stick with us…)

As you know, the Valley is incredibly diverse: Latinos make up over 40% of our community, including 10,000 Dreamers. Josh has made listening to our Latino community a top priority – one of the first hires we want to make (with your help!) is our Latino Constituency Director.

However, Republicans see an opportunity. They are waging an aggressive misinformation campaign to turn Latinos against Democrats like Josh. All this is happening online, in Spanish, and under the radar of Facebook and TikTok oversight. The ads range from calling Democrats communist (a salient hit for parts of our Latino community) to pushing false voter fraud conspiracy theories.

And Facebook barely notices – misinformation in Spanish is only caught 29% of the time, compared to 70% of the time when it’s in English. The GOP has free rein to lie online with little to no consequences. We’ve also seen misinformation spread across TikTok with accounts using AI to pose as Telemundo and Univision, spreading falsehoods to millions of voters while remaining undetected for months.

John, it’s clear that social media platforms aren’t prepared to deal with the slew of Spanish-language disinformation out there. This misinformation is extremely dangerous not only to Democrats, but literally to our democracy.
