Neighbors,

This week marked a major milestone for our city with the ribbon-cutting of Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center – GW Health, the first hospital built in the District in more than 25 years. Located on the historic St. Elizabeths East campus, this new facility brings high-quality, full-service care to residents east of the Anacostia River and represents a long-overdue investment in the health and well-being of our communities—especially in Ward 8.

From maternal health services and trauma care to specialty outpatient treatment, this hospital will serve as a critical resource for families across the city. I’m proud to support this transformative project and look forward to the opportunities it will create for better care, new jobs, and a healthier future for all District residents.

To every resident reading this—thank you for continuing to push for a more equitable and compassionate city. Your voices, your advocacy, and your resilience make progress like this possible.

In service,
Kenyan

Councilmember McDuffie Meets with Super Bowl Champion Vernon Davis to Talk Sports and Youth Empowerment

On Wednesday, April 8, Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie met with Super Bowl Champion and DC Power FC co-owner Vernon Davis to discuss the Councilmember’s Sports Capital Designation Act, a bold proposal to officially designate Washington, D.C. as the Sports Capital of the United States.

Vernon Davis expressed strong support for the bill and highlighted the powerful role sports play in shaping the lives of District youth. He also shared updates on his own efforts to uplift young people through athletics and community engagement.

Both leaders underscored their shared belief that sports are more than just games—they’re a pathway for youth to build confidence, foster leadership, and stay connected to their communities.
Ribbon Cutting at Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center

Yesterday, Thursday, April 10th, we celebrated a transformational moment for healthcare in the District with the ribbon-cutting ceremony for Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center – GW Health. Located at 1200 Pecan Street SE on the historic St. Elizabeths East campus, this brand-new, full-service hospital marks a major step forward in delivering high-quality care east of the Anacostia River.

The 136-bed facility is the first hospital built in the District in over 25 years and will provide a comprehensive range of services, including:
* Emergency care for both adults and children
* Maternal health and delivery services, featuring a Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)
* Trauma care
* General hospital services
* Outpatient and specialty care, including dialysis, cardiac rehab, and physical therapy

I am proud to be a supporter of this vital project. Cedar Hill Regional Medical Center is more than just a hospital—it’s a symbol of long-overdue investment in the health and well-being of our communities, especially those in Ward 8.

This facility will bring greater access to care, new jobs, and long-term benefits to residents across the District. I’m excited to see the positive impact this center will have for years to come.
Celebrating History: Alex Ovechkin Becomes NHL's All-Time Goals Leader

Today, I had the honor of joining the Washington Capitals at Capital One Arena to celebrate a monumental moment in sports history: Alex Ovechkin becoming the NHL’s All-Time Leading Goal Scorer.

This week, Ovechkin made history by scoring his 895th career goal, surpassing the legendary Wayne Gretzky’s longstanding record and cementing his legacy as one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Ovechkin’s achievement is not only a testament to his unmatched skill and dedication, but a proud moment for Washington, D.C. We celebrate this milestone alongside the Capitals, their fans, and the countless youth in our city who are inspired by what hard work and perseverance can accomplish.

We also explored next steps for deepening engagement between the Council and SBOE, with a shared goal of aligning efforts to better serve students, families, and educators citywide.

I had the pleasure of meeting with these dynamic leaders alongside my team to discuss the issues that matter most to their members and the broader community.

Our conversation centered on key priorities including maternal health disparities, equitable economic development, education, and ensuring our seniors are supported with the dignity and care they deserve. The AKAs also expressed a strong commitment to deepening their service in the District and finding new ways to uplift residents across all eight wards.

We’re grateful for their continued advocacy and partnership—and we look forward to working together to build a stronger, healthier, and more inclusive D.C.

On Thursday, April 10, 2025, Team McDuffie had the pleasure of meeting with members of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated during their Delta Day at the Council of the District of Columbia. Hosted by the Federal City Alumnae Chapter in collaboration with the Washington DC Alumnae Chapter, this annual event brought together members of the world’s largest African American Greek-letter organization to engage in critical policy discussions at the John A. Wilson Building.

With a global membership of over 300,000 and more than 2,000 members residing in the District, Delta Sigma Theta has long been a driving force in empowering communities through civic engagement, policy advocacy, and voter education. Since its founding in 1913, the Sorority has organized impactful initiatives at the local, state, federal—and even international—levels, including Delta Days at the United Nations and now once again, here in the Nation’s Capital.

Their visit underscored the importance of continued partnership between civic organizations and the DC Council to advance meaningful policies that improve the lives of District residents. We appreciate their advocacy, leadership, and deep commitment to community empowerment.
Jobs Not Guns, Jobs Not Drugs

📣 Investing in Our Youth: Jobs Not Guns, Jobs Not Drugs Event Recap

On Wednesday, April 9th, I had the opportunity to attend the Jobs Not Guns, Jobs Not Drugs Youth Career Builder Workshop—an inspiring and impactful event focused on empowering young people to make positive choices about their futures.

Over 150 youth, ages 15 to 24, participated in the workshop, which provided guidance, mentorship, and insight into career pathways. The event encouraged attendees to reflect on the long-term impact of their decisions and highlighted the opportunities available when choosing education, employment, and personal growth.

This initiative was made possible by a dedicated network of volunteers and District agency partners who generously donated their time and resources to support our next generation. A special shout out to Club House Studio for keeping the energy high with their DJ services!

Team McDuffie Joins Drug Free World for Prevention-Focused Event

World Health Day Spotlight: Drug Free World Seminar Promotes Prevention Through Education

In recognition of World Health Day, Team McDuffie had the opportunity to attend a powerful seminar hosted by Drug Free World, bringing together District partners in the fight against drug abuse. The message was clear: the more we know, the safer we are.

Research shows a direct link between perceived risk and drug use—when people understand the dangers, use goes down. But when that awareness fades, use tends to rise. That’s why early prevention and education are key. Drug Free World provides free, user-friendly materials that help young people and families learn the truth about drugs before it's too late.

We strongly encourage parents, educators, and community leaders to explore these resources and have real conversations with youth or anyone who may be struggling. Early engagement can make all the difference.

👏 Huge thank you to Thalia from Drug Free World for her tireless outreach across the District—especially in Wards 5, 7, and 8, which have been hardest hit by drug-related challenges. Your commitment to saving lives through knowledge is invaluable.
Community In Action: Team McDuffie Joins ANC-Led Walk in Ward 8

On Thursday, April 10th, Team McDuffie participated in a community walk through a neighborhood in Ward 8 alongside ANC Commissioner Scippio (8B02) and ANC 8B Chair Joseph Johnson, who helped lead the effort with partners from MPD, the Department of Behavioral Health (DBH), and the Ward 8 DC Prevention Center.

Over the past few months, we’ve been working closely with ANC 8B to address persistent challenges in this part of the ward, including public safety and drug activity, property and housing conditions, tenant rights, trash and litter, and infrastructure and traffic calming needs.

We remain committed to working hand-in-hand with community leaders, agency partners, residents, and local business owners to bring the resources needed to improve neighborhood conditions and enhance the quality of life for all who call this area home.

Department of Behavioral Health - Substance Use and Disorder Assessment and Referral Sites

Access Comprehensive Substance Use Treatment Services in DC

The DC Department of Behavioral Health (DBH) offers a wide range of substance use treatment services tailored to meet individual needs. These services include detoxification, medication-assisted treatment, individual and group counseling, self-help and recovery activities, and, in some cases, residential treatment. Certain residential programs even allow women to bring their children under 10 years old to live with them during treatment.

To access these services, individuals can visit an Assessment and Referral site without an appointment or call to schedule one. Qualified clinicians will conduct an assessment covering the nature of the addiction, use history, mental health needs, and overall health status. Based on this assessment, individuals can choose from a list of certified providers offering treatment tailored to their personal experiences and life circumstances.

Priority referrals are available for individuals living with HIV/AIDS, pregnant women, and women with children. Language and sign language interpretation services are also available to assist individuals with limited or no English proficiency.
