Dear John,
When Tesla was the only real electric vehicle manufacturer on the market, it made sense to give them a little incentive to get started. But that was 2015.
Today, electric vehicles are everywhere—and yet, Tesla is still enjoying a special carve-out in New Jersey law that allows them, and only them, to bypass dealership rules and sell directly to consumers. I believe in clean transportation. I’ve expanded EV infrastructure in Hoboken and supported climate action my entire career.
But I don’t believe in special rules for billionaires—especially when those same billionaires are laying off federal workers, cutting essential services, stuffing their pockets with our contracts and taxpayer dollars, and increasing prices for everyday Americans.
If direct-to-consumer sales are good for competition, then all automakers should have access—not just Elon Musk’s company. If they’re not, then let’s end the Tesla loophole.
New Jersey shouldn’t be writing laws that benefit one company at the expense of the people. Katie Brennan and I are calling for a level playing field for everyone—no special favors.
This is just one example of the kind of work we’ll take on in the State Assembly: putting working families ahead of corporate giveaways and standing up for fairness across the board.
Thank you for being in this fight with us. Election Day is June 10th this year!
Sincerely,
Ravi Bhalla
Mayor of Hoboken
Candidate for State Assembly LD-32
