In the News: House passes Senate budget plan, unlocks next step in Trump’s ‘big, beautiful bill’

The U.S. House on Thursday signed off on a budget bill that will provide the framework for congressional Republicans to carry out President Donald Trump’s agenda.

But it came only after a vote on the bill was abruptly canceled Wednesday night amid signs Speaker Mike Johnson was working until the last second to achieve the majority vote he needed to pass the legislation. The final tally was 216-214

“Congratulations to the House on the passage of a Bill that sets the stage for one of the Greatest and Most Important Signings in the History of our Country,” the president wrote on Truth Social. “Among many other things, it will be the Largest Tax and Regulation Cuts ever even contemplated.”

Votes this Week: Legislation to Extend Trump Tax Cuts, Safeguard Our Elections, and Rein in Rogue Judges

  1. H. Con Res. 14 - FY25 Budget Resolution to Unlock Reconciliation
    • Yesterday, the U.S. House of Representatives passed by a vote of 216-214 the FY25 Concurrent Budget Resolution as amended by the U.S. Senate. This is the first time a Republican-controlled Congress has passed a budget resolution since 2017. Last year, the American people gave Republicans a mandate to reduce out-of-control government spending, secure our borders, and reignite economic growth. Budget Reconciliation provides a path to deliver on those priorities with a simple majority vote in the Senate.
  2. H.R. 22 - Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act
    • Strengthens American election administration by requiring in-person proof of U.S. citizenship when individuals register to vote in federal elections.
    • It allows for more than six types of identification to prove U.S. citizenship—including passports, REAL IDs, military records, and tribal records.
    • It requires states to remove non-citizens from existing voter rolls and equips them with the tools to do so.

  1. H.R. 1526 - No Rogue Rulings Act (NORRA) Act
    • Limits the power of district judges in issuing nationwide injunctions.
    • Addresses growing concerns over judicial overreach, particularly instances where individual district judges halt executive policies.

Myth vs Fact: SAVE Act

MYTH: “The SAVE Act would prohibit married women – or anyone who has changed their name – from voting.”

FACT: This is fake news. Under the SAVE Act, those individuals (i.e. most) who have updated their documentary proof of citizenship (which can include things like a REAL ID, passport, or government-issued identification with their place of birth), no action is needed, and they can register to vote. For the small fraction of individuals who have not yet updated their documentation to reflect a name change, which most do immediately for other life purposes, the SAVE Act explicitly directs states to establish a process for them to register to vote irrespective of those discrepancies. Like other areas of the law, citizens will be able to use combinations of existing identification documents, certificates of birth from the state, and other similar documentation to demonstrate citizenship. No one will be left unable to register to vote due to a name change.

MYTH: “The SAVE Act would require everyone to have a U.S. passport to register to vote.”

FACT: The SAVE Act merely requires documentary proof of United States citizenship to register to vote. This is not limited to passports, but can include: a REAL ID (in use in all 50 states now), a US military ID card together with paperwork showing place of birth was in the United States, and any valid government issued identification card issued by Federal, State, or Tribal government showing the applicant’s place of birth was in the U.S.

MYTH: “In federal elections, we have no evidence of illegals voting.”

FACT: There is ample evidence of non-US citizens registering to vote. One 2014 study of the 2008 and 2010 elections found that non-citizens voted and likely impacted the outcome in several races. Virginia removed 1,481 voter registrations for “non-citizen status.” In 2014, North Carolina conducted a study that found over 1,400 registered voters on its rolls appeared to be non-citizens. Numerous states and local jurisdictions are actively seeking to register non-citizens in their elections. One illegal ballot cast is one too many and can impact the outcome of tight elections.

MYTH: “The SAVE Act is unnecessary because it is already illegal for non-citizens to vote.”

FACT: While only U.S. citizens can legally vote in Federal elections, the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) effectively stops states from checking citizenship during registration, preventing the law from being enforced. The SAVE Act is needed to require states to verify US citizenship when registering individuals to vote in federal elections, give states the tools to remove non-citizens from their voter rolls, and penalize officials that register non-citizens.

MYTH: ‘The SAVE Act will make it impossible for U.S. Service-members to vote if deployed aboard.”

FACT: This bill does not amend the Uniformed Overseas Citizens Absentee Voting Act (UOCAVA), and leaves in place existing procedures and safeguards for service-members abroad to vote absentee in federal elections.

MYTH: “The SAVE Act is unconstitutional and violates the principles of federalism.”

FACT: The Elections Clause, the Naturalization Clause, and the 15th, 19th, 24th, and 26th amendments clearly give Congress the authority to enact the SAVE Act. The SAVE Act is a narrow bill that simply strengthens the law that has governed the federal voter registration process for decades - the NVRA – by requiring states to verify citizenship for registration in federal elections.

Traveling Internationally? Here's What You Need to Know...

It’s more important than ever to be well-prepared before your international trip. Here are some essential tips to keep in mind:

  1. Apply for or Renew Your Passport Early: Passports are in high demand, and processing times may take longer than usual. To avoid any last-minute stress, apply for or renew your passport well in advance—ideally 6 months before your planned trip. Many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 6 months after your planned return date, so check your expiration date now. Our office is ready to help should you need assistance in securing your passport.
  2. Check Travel Advisories: Always check for any travel advisories on the State Department website for the country you're visiting. Also, take a moment to read "Crisis Abroad: Be Ready" to plan your evacuation options, should they be needed.
  3. Enroll in STEP: The Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) is a free service that keeps you updated on security information and allows U.S. embassies or consulates to contact you in case of an emergency. Plus, it makes it easier for them to reach your loved ones back home if necessary.
  4. Know Visa & Entry Requirements: Familiarize yourself with the entry requirements for your destination country online at www.travel.state.gov. For example, effective January 2025, U.S. citizens traveling to the UK for six months or less must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA). Make sure you're prepared ahead of time.
  5. Get Travel Insurance: Protect your trip with the right coverage. Travel insurance can cover evacuation, medical emergencies, and even death abroad. Many reputable companies offer quotes based on your trip’s total cost and desired coverage level.

Fraud Alert Friday: DOGE Exposed Our Immigration Asylum Disaster. That Was the Tip of the Iceberg.

“Fraud Alert Friday" highlights waste, fraud, and abuse occurring across the federal government.

Alert: Elon Musk, Antonio Gracias and the DOGE team recently exposed how rampant immigration fraud and government corruption became under the Biden administration. Specifically, they showed how aliens “getting” asylum can receive work authorization and, with it, an automatic Social Security number, which enables them to obtain driver’s licenses, commit voter fraud, and receive other benefits.

Rep. Loudermilk Co-sponsors Legislation

This week, I co-sponsored the following bills:

  • H.R. 2702 – FIRM Act (Rep. Andy Barr, R-KY)
    • Removes any reference to “reputational” risk from bank supervisory criteria, which would prevent the weaponization of bank regulators against legal businesses like firearms dealers, the cryptocurrency industry, the ATM industry, pawn shops, and others by removing the federal pressures that led to widespread debanking.
  • H.R. 2807 - Postal Service Transparency and Review Act (Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-GA)
    • This legislation seeks to ensure that any major alterations to postal operations affecting services on a national or regional scale are carefully examined, allowing congress and the public ample time to consider potential impacts.
