The assault on the Boundary Waters accelerates after a new Executive Order signed, waiving environmental review

There is a lot going on in the country right now -- the coronavirus pandemic and national protests against systemic racism. Look for an email from us later this week regarding our commitment to environmental and racial justice.

Using this turbulent time to gut environmental protections, President Trump signed an Executive Order that excludes public input on the environmental and public health impacts of federal projects like sulfide-ore mining next to the Boundary Waters.

This is not acceptable.

This Order allows agencies to bypass current laws requiring critical input from the public during environmental review. It all but ensures federal projects, such as Antofagasta’s Twin Metals mine, will be built without any input from impacted communities and will move toward completion without the necessary checks and balances.

"This Executive Order is another appalling attack on government transparency and accountability, and could significantly impact the environmental review process for dangerous sulfide-ore copper mining near the Boundary Waters,” said Becky Rom, National Chair of the Campaign to Save the Boundary Waters.
This Administration is doing everything it can to pave the way for this toxic mining project to move forward. Read more and take action with a donation today.
