New Democrat Coalition Chair Brad Schneider (IL-10)  issued a statement after President Trump announced (on Truth Social) a 90-day pause on a portion of the new tariffs, a continuation of the 10 percent tariff rate on every U.S. trading partner, and an escalation to a 125 percent tariff rate on China.

“In less than a week, President Trump’s ‘Liberation Day’ single-handedly wiped out more than $10 trillion of value on the stock market. His arbitrary tariffs, especially on allies and reliable trading partners, needlessly inflicted mass panic and pain on American consumers and businesses alike, only to be abandoned just days into his supposedly ‘permanent’ tariff regime.

“This abrupt reversal retreat proves beyond any reasonable doubt that the President does not have a strategy to help the American people or the economy. What was the purpose of this self-inflicted economic crash? Absent any solid explanation from the Administration, it’s evident the goal of the President and his corrupt cabinet of billionaires was to manipulate the market, concentrate power, and personally profit off of the chaos he created, while working people suffer.

“Now what will happen in 90 days? What will have changed? This pause offers no certainty for American families, small businesses, or our allies.

“Amidst all this confusion, one thing is crystal clear: the threat of this trade war and enormous national sales tax is not over, but just beginning. The President has only paused a portion of his tariffs, and retains the ability to decimate US and global markets by sending out another social media post at any moment.

“We must stop this whiplash and end the chaos once and for all. Congress must reclaim its constitutional responsibilities and strip the President of his ability to inflict senseless devastation on the American people.”

Vice Chair for Policy Nikki Budzinski (IL-13) and Economic Growth & Cost of Living Working Group Chair Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06) issued a statement after House Republicans voted to advance a budget resolution that defunds critical programs working people rely on, gifts trillions in tax cuts that largely benefit the wealthiest Americans:

“House Republicans’ disaster of a budget sacrifices the wellbeing of hardworking Americans on the mantle of massive tax cuts for their megabillionaire donors.

“Speaker Johnson and House Republicans’ budget will force the largest Medicaid cut in American history, jeopardizing health care for 72 million Americans. They promised to lower the cost of living. Instead, low-income families are grappling with uncertainty and rising grocery prices under Trump’s national sales tax and House Republicans are cutting $230 billion from the food assistance programs that keep 1 in 5 children from going hungry.

“And while they eviscerate critical programs families, children, seniors, and Veterans rely on, these very same lawmakers are plotting $4.5 trillion in unjustifiable, deficit-raising tax cuts to line the pockets of a handful of billionaires like Elon Musk.

“New Dems are appalled at House Republicans’ betrayal of the hardworking people who sent them to Congress. We’ll do everything in our power to fight back against this agenda and deliver on our promises to lower costs, protect health care, and improve the lives of the constituents we serve.”

Opinion: Tariffs will hammer the local, state and national economy

Op-Ed by Rep. Scott Peters (CA-50)

After months of threats and flip-flopping, President Trump instituted his across-the-board tariffs, including on our neighbors and allies. Whether you support Trump’s agenda or not, everyone in San Diego should understand that tariffs will increase our cost of living, threaten our region’s economy, and complicate our ability to work with Mexico to address pressing challenges such as cross-border sewage and the efficient flow of traffic through our ports of entry.

President Trump believes tariffs can be a powerful policy tool to protect America from becoming what he calls a “sucker nation” that gets taken advantage of by other countries. He has even labeled himself a “Tariff Man.” Yet his affinity for tariffs remains, at best, puzzling. It represents a worldview wherein America is weak and bullied, as well as a conscious policy choice to increase the cost of living for all Americans...
