Legislative Update

1

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

As we head into Legislative Spring Break, I want to take a moment to reflect on the progress we’ve made over the past few weeks. The pace at the Capitol has picked up as we near the end of session, with committees finalizing their budget bills and key proposals moving forward. I’ve been focused on making sure our community’s voice is heard—whether it’s investing in critical road projects, supporting teachers, or helping families and seniors find a safe, affordable place to call home. I also got the opportunity to meet with some veterans who were here for Veterans Day at the Capitol!

Here’s a quick update on what I’ve been working on for you:

Backing Local Road Improvements for Growth and Safety

2

This week, I presented my infrastructure bill for Cottage Grove, House File 1196 [ [link removed] ], before the Capital Investment Committee. The bill was laid over for potential inclusion in the final bonding bill, and I was honored to be joined by Washington County Commissioner Carla Bigham and Cottage Grove Mayor Myron Bailey, who helped make the case for why this project matters.

We’re seeking $22.5 million to support the County Road 19A and 100th Street realignment in Cottage Grove, which will open up access to 500 acres of prime land, improve freight movement, and address serious safety issues for trucks, cyclists, and pedestrians. The county and city have already secured over $13 million in competitive grant funding—much of it federal dollars we risk losing without state support.

This isn’t just a local road project. It’s a regional economic engine. With over 2,000 acres of development planned, this new arterial highway unlocks long-term job creation, improves traffic flow, and reduces dangerous rail crossings. I believe these are the types of investments that make a real difference—building safer communities while laying the groundwork for future economic growth. Video of the hearing is is above.

Delivering on Housing Support for Our Community

The House Housing Committee has now finalized its version of the housing omnibus bill, and while negotiations with the Senate and potential amendments remain ahead, I’m proud to share some of my provisions that made the cut.

* *Funding for manufactured home parks –* These often-overlooked communities are home to many seniors, working families, and first-time homeowners. We’ve advocated for resources to help these parks upgrade aging infrastructure and remain safe and livable.
* *Support for first-time homebuyers –* We pushed for more assistance to help Minnesotans achieve the dream of homeownership. These dollars can make a difference for young families looking to put down roots and build a future.

Affordable, reliable housing is foundational to healthy communities. These measures are about keeping people housed, empowering upward mobility, and ensuring we don’t leave anyone behind.

Keeping Promises to Educators: Pension Reform Updates

Earlier this week, I sent a letter to local teachers outlining our work to support strong and sustainable pensions. As a father of two kids who graduated from our local public schools, I know how much of a difference a great teacher makes. That’s why I’m committed to finding real, practical solutions to help educators retire with dignity.

We’re advancing two cost-conscious pension options this session:

* HF 2318 [ [link removed] ] – Offers unreduced retirement at age 62 with 30 years of service, funded by a 1% employer contribution.
* HF 2329 [ [link removed] ] – Expands early retirement at age 60 with 30 years of service, with a COLA delay to reduce costs.

These aren’t final decisions—we’re still seeking feedback. But they represent a step in the right direction: recognizing the service of our educators while respecting the financial realities we face today. I’ll keep advocating for local flexibility and fair treatment for the professionals who shape our kids' futures.

Spring Break & What Comes Next

The Legislature is now entering Spring Break, giving members time to return home, meet with constituents, and prepare for the final stretch of session. I’ll be using this time to reconnect with folks across our district and listen to your thoughts on the issues that matter most.

As always, I’m honored to represent you and work toward solutions that strengthen our region and improve lives. Thank you for staying engaged—and enjoy the (hopefully) warmer days ahead!

Have a great weekend and a Happy Easter!
