Dear Neighbors,

I wanted to give you a heads up for an upcoming event I’m holding with several of my DFL colleagues and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar.

Whether it’s undermining public education, imposing tariffs that drive up the cost of living and doing business, firing thousands of federal workers with no warning, or cutting Medicaid to give tax breaks to billionaires, the Trump administration’s policies are making life worse for everyone. Enough is enough.

We saw thousands of Minnesotans come together to make their voices heard here at the Capitol last weekend, and thousands more in communities all over the state. We need to keep that momentum going.

We’ll be holding a Town Hall on Monday, April 21, at 7pm to discuss the actions of the Trump administration, their impact on Minnesota, and what we’re doing to fight back.

If you’re able to join us, please RSVP here to receive the location information [ [link removed] ].

I hope to see you there!

Protecting Minnesota’s Workers and Economy

*Speaking of fighting back, this was a big week for our proposals in the Minnesota Legislature focused on defending our state against the Trump administration’s actions.

In last week’s update [ [link removed] ], I went over my legislation to create an action plan for the impact of the Trump tariffs on our economy. This week, I joined DFL legislators, small business owners, and veterans to highlight bills - including mine - that look after Minnesota’s workers and our economy [ [link removed] ].

If you’re a federal employee pressured into quitting your job, we want to lend you a helping hand. If you’re a veteran fired by the Trump administration, we want you to come work in Minnesota. If you’re a business owner or a Minnesotan that simply doesn’t want to break the bank when buying daily goods, we want to shield you from the impact of tariffs.

I want to lift up the testimony of a small business owner who joined us at our press conference yesterday, which you can watch here:

I encourage my Republican colleagues to take their heads out of the sand and look around. These Trump policies are bad for Minnesota, and if you don’t have the stomach to stop them, at least help us protect our neighbors.

The Road Ahead *

This week, we’re finalizing our budget proposals in the Minnesota House. As is the nature of our work this year, everything we’re putting forward needs bipartisan buy-in from both the DFL and GOP caucuses. This means we’re able to defend our progress from the last few years, stop the more radical proposals from our GOP colleagues, but also find some meaningful common-ground solutions.

Next week, neither the House or Senate are in session in recognition of the Easter and Passover holidays. It’s a nice break before we dive back in for the home stretch of the legislative session. In those final weeks, we’ll be putting our House budget proposals up against the Senate’s and recommendations from Governor Walz.

In the end, we’ll come out with a final state budget for the next two years, but the uncertainty and chaos from the Trump administration doesn’t make this process any easier. It’s difficult to budget when we have a federal partner that doesn’t pay their bills or rakes back funding that’s already been allocated.

We’ll do what we can to look out for Minnesotans. In the meantime, I hope you’ll reach out with any questions, comments, or ideas on how to make our community and state better.

Happy Easter and Passover to those who celebrate.

In partnership,

Michael Howard
