At Roe Your Vote Virginia, we are focused on helping abortion-rights candidates run and win in Virginia, and with every seat in the Assembly, plus the Governor’s office, up for election this November, we have a lot of work ahead of us.
We wanted to share a bit more about how we choose which candidates to support. As a group of advocates, legislators, and allies who have a history of on-the-ground work in the Commonwealth in support of reproductive health and freedom, we support candidates who are unapologetic and unabashedly pro-choice and who will fight to keep politicians out of Virginians’ personal reproductive health decisions.

Here are a few examples of questions that we ask anyone seeking our endorsement:

Will your support of reproductive health and rights, including abortion rights, access for all, sexual health education, economic justice and personal autonomy, or other reproductive health matters be significant issues in your race?

Do you support a right to safe, legal abortion?

Do you support an amendment to Virginia’s constitution that will protect reproductive freedom?

Will you oppose any legislation that limits the right of a patient in consultation with their health care provider to make the best decision for their health, including: attempts to legislate a patient’s intentions for deciding to end a pregnancy, criminalizing health care providers, gestational age bans (example 15-week abortion ban), or otherwise interfering with the provider-patient relationship?
Beyond our questionnaire, we look at a candidate's voting record and history of supporting abortion access before our board votes on whether or not to provide them with an endorsement. We take this process extremely seriously, but our endorsement means nothing without the backing and support of our incredible grassroots team.
