John, for years water companies have dumped filthy sewage into our rivers, lakes, and seas, damaging the environment, destroying wildlife, and making swimmers sick.

Today, our analysis found that one sewage spill from South West Water lasted 366 days last year! That’s up from 201 days the previous year.

Despite this, water companies paid over £20 million to executives last year in basic pay, pension contributions, and bonuses.

While customers face spiralling bills, water companies are lining their own pockets and harming the environment. This is a national scandal that should have been addressed years ago.

For years, the Conservatives neglected the sewage crisis; both in Westminster and in local government. They allowed water companies to dump filthy sewage almost with impunity.

Now it’s the same old story under Labour - they’ve failed to take any meaningful action to end the scandal.

It’s clear that only the Liberal Democrats are taking this issue seriously.

We must immediately ban bonuses for polluting water company bosses and replace the weak, ineffective water regulator Ofwat with a new Clean Water Authority with real power to hold water companies accountable.

Our proposals would give this new authority the power to conduct unannounced inspections, set binding targets to prevent sewage discharges, and revoke licences of poorly performing companies swiftly.
