Yesterday, the U.S. House voted to approve the SAVE Act, a bill that could result in the disfranchisement of MILLIONS of eligible voters – especially women. I am appalled that Republicans would even consider bringing this terrible bill to the floor for a vote, and I am disgusted that it has passed.
This is just another attempt by Republicans to strip away voting rights and dismantle our democracy.
Democrats have been sounding the alarm on this bill for a very important reason – this bill requires Americans to provide proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.
The catch: According to the Brennan Center for Justice, over 21 million citizens don’t have easy access to these documents. Additionally, 69 million married women in America who have legally changed their last names and do not have birth certificates to match may be silenced.
