Because Donald Trump keeps “joking” about his efforts to become president for a third term.
If we know anything about Trump, it’s that we need to take his “jokes” seriously.
For one, Trump is deeply unhumorous. And more importantly, he uses jokes to float ideas he is seriously considering.
He joked about buying Greenland. Then, he sent the Vice President of the United States to the country in a vain effort to try to win over their population — it didn’t work. They wouldn’t even meet with him.
While Republican leaders, Fox News talking heads, and Trump administration officials insist that Trump is joking about a third term, given his violent effort to stop the last transfer of power, it is no laughing matter.
There’s no length he isn’t willing to go to hold onto power. Think of his plea for Russian help hacking Hilary Clinton’s emails in 2016 (they did). Think of the threats against Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy (Trump was impeached over them). Think of the January 6th insurrection (impeached again).
John, we need to be ready for any attempt by Trump to hold power again when his nightmare term is over.
I will continue to use my platform in the United States Senate to hold Trump accountable and push back on any effort to violate the Constitution.
But the best way to prevent any attempt at a third term is to take back the Senate majority — so we can put an even more effective check on his abuses of power.
