Friends,
Many of us know the stories of George Floyd and Eric Garner, who told us they couldn't breathe. Or Tamir Rice, whose life was cut short before his thirteenth birthday. But the truth is, there are countless more stories like theirs that we haven't heard. And every single one is a tragedy.
Congress should be leading on this issue, taking tangible action to prevent more police-involved acts of violence.
That's why the second Senate bill I ever introduced was the Police Training and Independent Review Act, which would:
Encourage police departments to implement anti-bias and de-escalation training, and
Ensure that misconduct cases are investigated (and prosecuted, if necessary) by impartial, independent prosecutors. Local prosecutors have a clear conflict of interest because they rely on the same police departments to win other cases. They should not be in charge of investigating people they work with closely.
And it's why I'm pushing so hard to pass it now. We can't afford to wait any longer.

I will not accept that in the United States of America, black men and women are still being executed by police officers on the street without judge or jury. We have to do better.
George Floyd isn't here to speak up for himself. So it's on all of us to advocate for justice on his behalf.
I hope you will join me.
All my best,
Tammy Duckworth
