# [#]President Donald Trump proudly calls himself “Tariff Man” – and here in San Diego, we’re the ones paying the bill for his political stunts.

His reckless trade war isn’t just harming our global relationships with allies. It’s hiking prices on everything from gas to groceries to health care. And make no mistake – Trump’s 90-day pause on tariffs doesn’t change the situation. It only accentuates the air of uncertainty and unreliability Trump has created.

In my latest San Diego Union-Tribune op-ed, which was published the day before Trump’s tariff pause, I broke down how Trump’s trade war is making life exponentially harder for San Diegans, tanking the economy, and complicating our ability to work with our allies. “A tariff is a tax levied on imported goods and services and paid for by importers. Trump says foreign countries pay these taxes. They do not. American companies and the American people pay for them. San Diego importers pay them.

San Diegans will see the cost of imported goods skyrocket as tariffs of up to 50 percent take effect. A leading trade organization estimates that they could cost households in San Diego and throughout the country as much as $7,600 per year.

You don’t need to take my word to understand the threat of Trump’s tariffs; we already know from experience. In 2018, President Trump instituted tariffs on Chinese goods. American consumers, not China, paid the cost for that decision to the tune of over $4 billion a month, by some estimates.” In essence, Trump’s trade war isn’t against China or another foreign nation – it’s against American consumers, particularly San Diego residents. And when Democrats highlight the truth about his reckless policies, as I did in this article, Trump backs down!
