In North Carolina, Republicans are showing us just how far they’re willing to go to overturn a free and fair election. Here’s what you need to know:

1. Multiple recounts have confirmed that Republican Jefferson Griffin lost last November’s state supreme court race to Democratic incumbent Justice Allison Riggs. We were proud to endorse her as a Democracy Defender in that election, and the people of North Carolina have spoken.

2. Rather than concede, Griffin and state Republicans sued to try to steal this seat on North Carolina’s highest court.

3. Conservative judges on North Carolina’s Court of Appeals sided with their colleague Griffin’s attempt to challenge the ballots of over 65,000 voters. If it’s upheld, the ruling could overturn Justice Riggs’ victory.

4. Next, this decision was appealed to the North Carolina Supreme Court. 

5. If Republicans get away with this anti-democracy plot, you can guarantee they’ll try to replicate this playbook across the country.
