Team,
Last week, I signed a bill to make the expungement process in New Jersey more accessible and transparent — because when someone has done the work to move forward, they deserve a justice system that doesn’t hold them back. And on Tuesday, I announced a new round of pardons and commutations for 93 individuals who have dedicated themselves to becoming responsible, well-rounded citizens who are passionate about contributing to their communities and society as a whole.
For too long, outdated policies have made it harder for people to rebuild their lives. Even after serving their time, many face unnecessary hurdles to getting a job, securing housing, or providing for their families — all because of a system that wasn’t designed to offer a true second chance. That’s not justice, and that’s why we’re taking action.
In the past few years, together with partners in law enforcement, we’ve been part of an effort to process more expungement orders than ever before and worked to reduce backlogs so people aren’t stuck waiting in limbo. We’ve also invested in rehabilitation and reentry programs that help people succeed.
This new bill and round of clemency actions are a couple more steps in the right direction. But there’s still more work to be done to make our justice system truly fair and equitable.
If you support further efforts to right the wrongs of our justice system, add your name to our petition today.
Together, we can build a stronger, fairer justice system for all.

Phil Murphy is hard at work on policies to rebuild the American Dream right here in New Jersey.
He’s cutting taxes, creating jobs, funding schools, and expanding opportunity — but he’s not alone. Stronger Fairer Forward exists to support that vision. Together, we’ll create more opportunities and revitalize the middle class.
