Dear John,

Thanks to swift action, the power of our network and the support of our donor community, we achieved a critical victory this week in the fight to protect sound, logical business practices. But it highlights why your ongoing support for Ceres is more vital than ever.

On Monday, we learned about a deeply concerning bill in the Texas legislature. Imagine this: a company required by law in the state of California or in the EU to report its global emissions would face hefty penalties in Texas for simply including its Texas-based emissions in its reporting.

Indeed, the proposed legislation aimed to make it illegal for companies operating in Texas to comply with established climate disclosure laws in major markets elsewhere.

This legislation wasn't just counterproductive to the state’s economic goals—it was an attempt to silence transparency and create an impossible compliance nightmare for businesses operating responsibly.

Your support fuels Ceres' ability to be the crucial first responder.
Texas Legislative FTI Victory
Within hours of discovering this threat on Monday, our Freedom to Invest initiative sprang into action.

We immediately rallied our allies, engaged our policy experts, and started a legal review process of the legislation. We then reached out to over a hundred companies that would be impacted by the legislation, including household names that could make a big impact.

The response from companies was overwhelming. Swift industry engagement ultimately resulted in the sponsor of the legislation withdrawing the bill before the hearing.

Take a deep breath and congratulate yourself. This is a significant win. It demonstrates the power of rapid response, strategic engagement, and the collective voice of businesses and advocates demanding climate action and transparency.

However, this fight is far from over. The bill is one of almost two dozen we are working to defeat in Texas alone this year and is one example of a broader trend attempting to obstruct climate progress and penalize responsible corporate behavior. Challenges like the one we and our allies just defeated are popping up all over the country, requiring constant vigilance and the resources to act decisively.

Will you make a gift today to bolster Ceres' rapid response team and help us defend climate progress against legislative threats?
Yes, I want to defend climate progress
Your contribution directly supports:
  • Expert policy analysis and legal review.
  • Direct policy and media engagement in key states.
  • Amplification of influential investor and company voices.
  • Dedicated staff time for immediate, strategic action, and rapid response.
The victory in Texas shows what we can achieve together when we act quickly and decisively.

When threats emerge, we mobilize experts, engage policymakers and journalists effectively, activate our networks, and provide critical analysis—often within hours, not days or weeks.

Thanks to a generous donor, when you make a donation today your contribution is doubled, ensuring Ceres has the resources to meet the next challenge head-on and continue driving solutions for a cleaner, more resilient economy.

Thank you for standing with Ceres.

Sincerely,

P.S. Struggling to think of other cases when a company is penalized in one state for complying with another state’s laws? You might have to go back as far as the Fugitive Slave Act to find an example. The Ceres community refuses to regress hundreds of years. The dangerous bill was stopped before it could gain momentum, thanks to the kind of rapid, strategic intervention your support makes possible. Please give generously to help us stay on the right side of history, vigilant and prepared for future fights.
