Our colleagues and fellow leaders of the Hatikvah Slate wrote a haggadah insert for Pesach 2025/5785. As we get ready to lay our seder tables this weekend, we hope that these intentions will resonate with you.
NJN mobilized grassroots calls to Senate offices in opposition to Mike Huckabee's nomination. Yesterday, he was confirmed to the post of Ambassador to Israel. That’s the bad news. The good news is that we held the line. In normal times, nominees for ambassador to Israel enjoy large bipartisan support, and are routinely confirmed by more than 90 senators. The Huckabee nomination was supported by only one Democrat, John Fetterman. This is even fewer Democrats than Trump’s nominee to this post eight years ago managed to get.
DHS can now deny immigration benefits - including applying for visas and lawful residency - based on whether or not the current administration thinks your social media activity aligns with *their* interpretation of antisemitism. NJN spoke up, as we told The Hill: "We already know that President Trump doesn't shy away from breaking bread with and hiring antisemites. And he has already weaponized antisemitism to silence those he disagrees with and to strip funding from universities... Antisemitism is a real and very serious problem, but this is not the answer. Given Trump's track record, we already know that this move is not genuinely about protecting American Jews."
The situation in Israel is changing quickly. We’ve seen headlines about fighting in Gaza and Lebanon, passage of legislation that would politicize Israel’s judicial branch, and the return of mass protests against the Israeli government. Meanwhile, we know that the settler movement – with the backing of the government - is creating facts on the ground that would effectively annex the West Bank to Israel. To help make sense of this and more, NJN hosted a webinar on Thursday featuring Lior Amihai and Hagit Ofran of Peace Now.
