SB217 strengthens public access to bodycam recordings, improves tracking of all use of force cases in Colorado, but most importantly it removes “Qualified Immunity” (QI) from use as a defense against lawsuits directed towards individual cops. The end of QI reduces institutionalized police power and warrants the active support of the Local.

SB217 is facing important votes today and tomorrow. It is urgent that you call state legislators today.

We recognize that SB217 is the start of the conversation, not the end of it. The bill does not go far enough, but it tangibly erodes one pillar of police power, their complete immunity from repercussions for their violence. Denver DSA remains committed to the full abolition of the police state that upholds capitalism and white supremacy through continual war against black and brown communities.
