1) Seeing Green

The tariff debate is only just beginning and is likely more bearish than bullish, so we will see more days of big sell offs (the market is down today) unless Trump can strike deals to ratchet tariffs down. But yesterday was the best in history in terms of point increase on the Dow (nearly 3,000 points up), and one of the best ever for percentage gain.

We need more bullish days like that. Passing the tax cut would help.

2) House Deficit Hawks May Blow Up the Big Beautiful Tax Bill

Speaking of dangerous games, the House canceled their vote on the Senate budget amendment last night, after stalling for hours to round up the votes and coming up short.

The deficit hawks - many of whom are our friends - just don’t seem to understand that we are trying to head off a potential recession. That would tank revenues and make the deficit WORSE. If that happens, say goodbye to Republican majorities after the midterms.

There is no one in Washington who wants to cut bloated government spending more than us, but holding the tax bill hostage is a fool’s errand.

3) Trump Proposes one of the Greatest Deregulations Ever

Every anti-energy regulation at the EPA, the Department of Energy, the Interior Department, and the Army Corps of Engineers will sunset unless specifically designated for re-promulgation under Trump's new "Zero-Based Regulatory Budgeting" executive order.

He also issued orders directing agencies to rescind rules that are contrary to recent Supreme Court decisions including the end of the Chevron Doctrine, directing the FTC to identify government policies that inhibit competition, and this instant classic: overturning Biden's de facto ban on full-flow showers:

4) Make America Warm Again

We at UP have been at the lead crusading against the Biden appliance bans. See Steve Moore’s WSJ column on the gas water heaters that put this issue front and center.

Great news. The Senate yesterday joined the House in getting the prohibition overturned. Every Republican present, plus the two Georgia Democrats (Rinnai is in Georgia) voted yes.

5) Gasoline Prices Plunge - Except in California

Gasoline prices have eased in 31 states as oil has fallen to below $65 a barrel since Trump came into office. But California isn’t one of them.

Gov. Gavin Newsom says California's sky-high gas prices are due to greed by "Big Oil" companies. But a new study from the University of Southern California says Newsom's analysis is running on empty, and puts the blame squarely on state regulations.

"There is no economic data to support the allegation of price gouging," Michael Mische of USC's business school says in his study. "It just doesn't exist."

What does exist is a web of environmental policies. They include the state's cap-and-trade charge for the industry that is passed down to the consumer, high environmental fees, its unique blended gasoline, and at 60 cents a gallon, the highest gas tax in the nation. All this raises the price per gallon to an average of $4.85 a gallon or a third higher than the national average.
