We’re just seeing the first signs of spring, but already, we’re gearing up for our youth summer internship program. For years, our internship program has served as inspiration for WAVE staff and supporters, and to be completely honest, it’s the part of my job which gives me the most hope for our future.

Here are a few of the things last year’s interns have accomplished in the past nine months:
* Helped facilitate Milwaukee’s Wear Orange events during National Gun Violence Awareness weekend
* Organized Flags for Remembrance , an event which included live music and interactive art
* Launched Artists Against Gun Violence , a club for high schoolers (which will unveil a new mural at Milwaukee High School of the Arts in May)
* Participated as founding members of Wisconsin’s new Gun Violence Prevention Youth Coalition, which, for the first time ever, brings together youth-centered gun violence prevention advocates from a variety of national and state organizations
* Highlighted the urgent the need for action at a press conference following the tragic shooting at Abundant Life Christian School in December
* Served as a featured speaker at Governor Evers’ announcement of a new statewide Office of Violence Prevention
* Attended over a dozen events to raise awareness about root causes of, and solutions to gun violence.
Additionally, we welcomed back one of our earliest interns into a full-time position here at WAVE.
