Hey Team,
AI is becoming more accessible in all forms, and it’s everywhere: ChatGPT upgraded their image generator; [1] Meta’s AI is offering to write comments for you; [2] and you can talk to AI chatbots of just about anyone – including a teen who died by suicide after talking to a similar AI chatbot. [3] It’s supposed to be the tech of the future, but it’s not making things better. In fact, it’s actively making our experience online worse, while AI companies profit.
AI can be innovative, but we need regulations around it to protect us from fake information and hateful content. Add your name to demand AI safeguards now.
Here’s a snippet of the latest:
-
ChatGPT’s image generator has very few guardrails, meaning people can use it for fraud and scams, including fake receipts, job offers, cease and desists, advertising, and more. [4]
-
Without content moderation, Meta is allowing AI slop (and we mean horrifying stuff – like deepfake rape videos and sexualized fake influencers with down syndrome) to proliferate their platforms. [5]
-
An AI database leak revealed that people are using the tech to create images of child sexual abuse. [6]
And because the overwhelming majority of people can’t detect deepfakes, many people may not even realize they’re viewing AI [7] – because generators don’t need to label their content. Meanwhile, AI companies can profit from copyrighted content as courts debate rules around whether AI is considered fair use. [8] Big Tech doesn’t care about reliable information or safety online – they care about making more money.
Because of Big Tech's greed, AI growth isn’t slowing down, and it means our exposure to false and dangerous content won’t either. We can't keep waiting for lawmakers to realize the urgency of this threat. We need them to step up NOW and protect our online information system from becoming AI slop. Add your name.
In solidarity,
