A note from from Mayor Brian Turnbull...
** DEAR NORTHVILLIANS,
------------------------------------------------------------
Racial Equality, along with business re-engagement is on everyone’s minds these days in Northville.
Regarding re-engagement and support of our businesses who reopened 6/4 and our restaurants who resumed dining 6/8:
* City Council has approved a motion brought to them by DDA (Downtown Development Authority) to support a social district for restaurants & retailers on our downtown streets through this fall. This will give our downtown a new look & feel, and I’m confident it will be a very enjoyable experience for everyone.
On a national scope, happenings in the world these past weeks following the George Floyd tragedy reminds us that compassion and respect for all in our society is paramount for every one of us … it’s crucial we use our voices against racism.⠀
⠀
My family has been part of the fabric of this community for generations, and we have historically supported community activism on all levels. It was my honor & privilege to join Black Lives Matter protests this past week in Plymouth and South Lyon. And here in town, a similar peaceful rally is planned for 4:00 PM, Saturday, June 13^th, in the park behind City Hall.
⠀
I know I can’t truly understand all the viewpoints, but please know I am committed to be an ally and actively work against racism or discrimination of any kind, while making sure residents feel safe, are heard and supported. It’s up to us to educate our families and our community about racism (in our homes, through our churches, our schools, our civic activities, and through each of our interactions on a daily basis). We can make a difference together, and it’s incumbent on us to embrace and set an example for our children, grandchildren, friends and neighbors: Racism will not be tolerated. ⠀
⠀
The George Floyd heartbreak, along with the tragic deaths of Breonna Taylor, Ahmaud Arbury and far too many other African Americans, underscores the overdue need for communities to protect all of our citizens regardless of race, color, religion or beliefs. ⠀
⠀
I’m confident that the Northville Public Safety professionally trained team is fair and respectful when it comes to enforcement of our laws. It’s my heartful vow that as society struggles with racial inequality issues, Northville will continue to respect everyone’s rights and be compassionate to all our fellow Americans. ⠀
Congrats again to all the seniors! The first day of the rest of your life is just ahead of you… it’s up to each of us to encourage them to make a difference in the world, to stand for social justice and to cease the moment in this “New Norm” we are all experiencing. Tagging into this theme, I virtually awarded the Claude Ely Community honor (historically the City’s top honor) to Senior Annie Heitmeier for her community contributions and her caring nature. Ms. Heitmeier was the student body Vice President and more importantly, the President of the “Color My World Club”. The “Color My World” team established long-lasting positive impacts on students, staff and our community. Annie has also been involved with Rotary outreach. Congrats!!
COVID19 UPDATES
Highlights:
* Hair salons and barbershops can re-open Monday, 6/15.
* In Northern Michigan, outdoor crowds are approved to 250, indoor 50, outdoor performance and sporting events to 500 people. We’ll get there soon.
* The Northville Business District has been approved to be a festive pedestrian traffic area (with Music!), which includes expanded seating into the streets for restaurants and the availability for retailers to display merchandise outdoors. I encourage you to support your local shops in Northville – their well-being could be dependent on our patronage.
* Our Parks and Recreational areas opened 6/1, with appropriate precautions.
* COVID-19: Northville has had 42 cases/7 fatalities. Michigan 59K/6K and the Nation 2.0M/110K.
* Testing and contact tracing is ramping up throughout the state. This is a marathon, not a sprint!
* Our lives will be different now as it relates to our work environment, socialization and personal spacing. My commitment to you has been and will continue to keep you connected and safe, communicating daily, publishing weekly and through monthly Town Hall meetings.
ACTIONS
* I encourage people to not drop your guard now … because of the hard work and sacrifice you’ve made; we are able to re-engage. Please remain vigilant, wear your mask while in congested groups, practice social distancing and remain patient as we continue to fight COVID-19 together.
* Downtown Events – We are cautiously optimistic about the concert series and other events. We will work within the State’s directives and policies.
* Finally, we are and will always be grateful to our essential workers: First Responders, Medical Personnel and those that have shared their time & talents in these extraordinary times
OTHER
City Road projects are approved or underway in 14 locations to keep your roads safe:
* Rogers St. (should be paved in the next week), the 4-inch Cast Iron water pipes that were filled with corrosion have been replaced. New 8-inch synthetic pipes will provide great benefits for the community long-term.
* As many of you have seen, we are working with Wayne County who has started the repaving of Sheldon between 6 and 7 Mile.
* The City is also paving our surface lots (Ford Field lot presently).
Continue to share your time and talents with those in our community. Many Northvillians have worked tirelessly to help our town get through this extraordinary time. Now it’s up to us to assist Northville to re-engage and support our local businesses more than ever.
Be safe, and continue to Keep that Northville Faith! Thank You for all you are doing!
Stay #NorthvilleStrong!
