Friends and neighbors,
Last budget cycle, Governor Walz and the Democrats raised state spending by a staggering 40%. And on top of spending the entire state surplus, they raised taxes another $9 to $10 billion. It has made Minnesota one of the highest-taxed states in the country, and it’s driving people and businesses out.
Here is one example of the trend we are seeing. A friend of mine from our district who ran a manufacturing business sat down with his accountant recently. They figured out that by moving to South Dakota, he could save $12 million over the next decade.
Let me repeat that: he could save $12 million just by moving to South Dakota.
So he packed everything up, sold his places, and moved everything across the border.
That’s not a one-off story. According to the IRS, Minnesota lost $2.19 billion in income in 2022 alone. We are drawing in more dependency and chasing out productivity. That’s not healthy for our economy, and it certainly is not sustainable.
